Ceramic Tile

... specific applications tiles are rated the P.E.I. (Porcelain Enamel Institute) scale. The tiles are evaluated for wear resistance on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).

· PEI 1: Light Traffic - recommended for residential bathrooms or other areas with light traffic and where shoes are not frequently used.

· PEI 2: Medium Traffic - recommended for residential interiors, except entryways, kitchens, stairs or any area where tiles may come into contact with gravel or sand.

· PEI 3: Medium-heavy Traffic - recommended for all residential interiors and light commercial applications. Not recommended for commercial entryway.

· PEI 4: Heavy Traffic - suitable for all residential interiors and most commercial applications, including shopping malls and public areas.

PEI 5: Heavy-plus Traffic - all residential and commercial areas where heavy-duty wearability is needed.

Ceramic Tile and porcelain tile are an excellent medium to explore both for functionality and design. Ceramic and porcelain tiling is dense and strong, easy to clean, long lasting and does not absorb smell, water or carry allergens. It is excellent as a kitchen tile or bathroom tile, but it can serve in any part of the house as either floor tile or decorative wall tile. Because ceramic and porcelain tiles are manmade, there is also more flexibility in the tile design. The tiles come in a sometimes overwhelming array of colors and arrangements, assuring that you will be able – perhaps only after many, many samples and some help from our staff – to pick out the tile for your  project

The term "ceramic tile" is a rather loose one, inasmuch as a number of tiling and paving products are included in the description.  Ceramic wall tiles made from "slip," the same material figurines are made from;  monocottura (single-fired) floor tiles;  rock-hard porcelain tiles;  and mosaic tiles made from either porcelain or clay are some of the varieties called "ceramic tiles."

Resists moisture, tile is the perfect choice for areas where water is a concern, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Cleanup is a snap. Tile makes for countless design possibilities, thanks to the variety of colors, sizes, textures, and decorative accents available.

Over the last few years, Mohawk Ceramic Manufacturing made significant efficiency improvements to the manufacturing process:

· Turning off burners

· Lighting changed to high-performance T8 fluorescent bulbs

· Office occupancy sensors installed

The resulting energy savings from these equal enough natural gas to fuel more than 6,000 homes and enough electricity to service more than 1,700 homes for an entire year.
